Get up and running with LocateIQ

Install & grant permissions

Download LocateIQ from the App Store (iOS) or Google Play (Android). On first launch you'll approve the access the app needs to do its job in the field:

• Location — required for GPS positioning and every captured point.
• Bluetooth — required to connect external GNSS receivers and locators.
• Camera — optional, for geotagged field photos.

Review the Terms of Use and Privacy Policy on the permissions screen, then continue.

Choose how you sign in

LocateIQ works three ways. Pick the one that matches your account — you can change later.

Set up positioning

For survey-grade accuracy, pair a receiver and feed it corrections:

• Connect your receiver — open the Bluetooth screen and select your GNSS device. Supported receivers and locators appear automatically.
• Add NTRIP corrections — enter your caster host, port, mount point, and credentials to stream RTK corrections. Your fix type (RTK Fixed / Float) shows live.
• Capture Lock — set the accuracy and fix-type gates you're willing to record at. Points below your threshold are held back so bad fixes never make it into your data.
• Coordinate system — confirm your EPSG / datum, geoid, and epoch so elevations and northings land where you expect.

Open or create a map

From Projects, open the map or web map you'll be working in — or start a new local project. In ArcGIS and Subsurface Maps modes your existing layers load so you're capturing into the right place from the first point.

Set your active layer and default attributes so each capture is tagged consistently without extra taps.

Capture points, lines & photos

• Points — stand over the feature, confirm your fix, and tap capture. Attributes and the LocateIQ Rating are recorded with each point.
• Lines — capture a run of points sharing a note/utility; LocateIQ builds the polyline for you.
• Photos — snap a geotagged photo that syncs as a feature attachment, right where you're standing.

Trace with Locate Mode

Locate Mode turns a walk-out into a scored line. As you sweep with your locator, LocateIQ reads the signal and plots the trace with live audio feedback and a running quality score — so you can hear and see where the line is confident and where it isn't.

Read the LocateIQ Rating

Every point carries a LocateIQ Rating — a per-point snapshot that combines the electromagnetic field reading, GNSS quality, and the consistency of your locate. It tells you the confidence of both the locate and the mapped position, so a reviewer can trust the good points and revisit the weak ones.

Sync & export

• Cloud sync — ArcGIS and Subsurface Maps data flows back to your org's services (two-way in ArcGIS).
• Exports — produce KMZ (with photos), CSV, or GeoJSON for hand-off or archiving.

Working 811 tickets Optional

Load a ticket to capture inside its boundary with due dates and status tracked. Downloaded utility lines display on the map alongside the boundary, and you can generate a public share link so contractors and stakeholders can view — and comment on — the ticket without an account.
